Like its predecessor, Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie À Deux will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which gets underway today.

Despite going on to become a huge hit, the first Joker proved to be polarizing when it screened at Venice back in 2019, and Festival director Alberto Barbera believes the sequel will ruffle just as many feathers.

"If you expect just a second part of the previous one, exactly the same kind of narrative and situation and so on, you are wrong, because the theme is much darker," he told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. "It is much more inventive from every point of view. It's completely unexpected. I think it is very bold, and brave, and creative, and an incredibly original film."

We'll be sure to share the first reactions when the movie screens on September 4. In the meantime, Warner Bros. India has shared a pair of character posters spotlighting Joaquin Phoenix as the returning Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, aka "Lee."

If it wasn't already clear from the trailers, Gaga's interpretation of the popular DC Comics villain/anti-hero will be very different to both her comic book counterpart and Margot Robbie's previous big-screen version of the character.

"The high voice, that accent, the gum-chewing and all that sort of sassy stuff that’s in the comics, we stripped that away," director Todd Phillips said in a recent interview. "We wanted her to fit into this world of Gotham that we created from the first movie."

Deadpool and Wolverine recently passed Joker's lifetime gross to become the biggest R-rated movie of all time, but Folie À Deux could well reclaim the global box office crown when it arrives in theatres this October.

As for a potential threequel, Phillips doesn't see it happening: "It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies, but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world."

“Joker: Folie À Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him."

From acclaimed writer/director/producer Todd Phillips comes Joker: Folie À Deux, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019’s Academy Award-winning Joker, which earned more than $1 billion at the global box office and remains the (second) highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

The new film stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, opposite Oscar winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born). The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out, Capote), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.

Joker was awarded the Golden Lion, the festival's highest prize, at the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

Just..well…you know…

@IronGenesis - It was, and it also divided attendees and critics.

@IronGenesis - There was a pretty sizable pushback to the movie stating that it would “incite hateful violence” or some such nonsense. I’m quite sure that pushback was all from the corporate press and a small portion of the critics, but it was still there.

@mountainman - They were probably just thinking about what happened with The Dark Knight Rises.

@ObserverIO - As a person who lives not too far from the Aurora, CO theater where that happened, I understand. But most media hype about this type of stuff is way overblown. It reminds me of the violent video game panic of the 90’s and early 00’s.

With Joker specifically, the movie highlights a very real issue. An outcast who was harassed and abused by others in society snaps and causes violence. This is something that happens. And most people that carry out the worst forms of mass violence have had terrible things happen in their past that drive them to that violence. But to me, criticizing a movie that highlights this real issue rather than trying to confront the issue itself is not the right answer.

@mountainman - I hear you, and didn't agree with the idea that it would incite violence, but I still think the movie wants to have it's cake and eat it too.

There were perfect ways to execute what they claimed to be wanting to do without the dance scene (among others but I don't feel like writing a dissertation right now) down the steps that downright glorified him. And being that those steps became a tourist attraction where people recreated the scene, yeah, I'd say the point was missed.

Even if you wanted to have a scene where he fully embraces a dark side and snaps, imagine that scene but with an ominous score instead of gary [frick]ing glitter.

I know I've gotten off of the point here, but basically I always scoff at Phillips saying "no no, it was about the dangers of mental illness and how we treat those people in this country" while also having a scene that's shot to make him look cool. You can't have it both ways.

All that is to say, I don't think the movie itself incited violence, but it certainly sent a shitty ass message, and with Fleck's speech at the end portrayed him in a way that certainly feels like the filmmaker is saying Fleck was right, when no. No he wasn't. Not in his actions.

@mountainman - bah, I know I said I didn't want to write a dissertation but the entire end of the movie undermines what they claim the message is supposed to be. He dances down the steps to the equivalent of a heroes entrance, he gives a heroes speech that makes it seem as though he is right. He is celebrated in the streets and gets his scene in the cop car where he takes it in and enjoys it, and then we get the goofy ending in the psyche ward with the bloody foot prints.

The reason why I say the "cool" factor is irresponsible in this movie, and not say the dark Knight, is all in execution. There's nothing wrong with a "cool" anti-hero, or even a cool villain. The genre is based on it. HOWEVER this movie claimed to be about mental illness, not a super hero movie, and THAT'S the distinction.

@SATW42 - Totally get that point. They turned him into a “hero” in the end. It would have hit that stated theme better had the negative impacts of the riots at the end been explored a bit better. We likely get the after affects in the sequel, but it did seem to idolize him at the end.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 8/28/2024, 2:50 PM
@mountainman - I have a sneaking suspicion that this sequel might even turn him into a victim (with Lady Gaga being the manipulative "evil" person that makes him do bad things).
mountainman
mountainman - 8/28/2024, 3:03 PM
@ObserverIO - I really hope that isn’t true. I know they are taking liberties with Harley Quinn, but Joker corrupting her, the abusive relationship they had, and her eventual moving on from that is a very good arc (not that it would all be in this movie).

I hope it's good! I thought the first one was very well done, if a bit derivative. This one seems to have the chance to be breaking some new ground.

It doesn't even have the name of the movie just the name of the actors Phoenix & Gaga selling the movie based on the actors.

I hate to be that guy, but I guess these posters are for people who know a sequel is coming out? Because it looks like posters for Gaga and Phoenix and not, ya know, a Joker movie.

Maybe they aren't posters and are just for social media use where they would be used in context, like they are here?
