A new magazine cover has been revealed which puts the spotlight on Joker: Folie à Deux before its release this October and it puts the spotlight squarely on Arthur Fleck and his newfound love, "Lee."

In this October's Joker: Folie À Deux, we'll find Arthur Fleck locked up in Arkham Asylum and facing the death penalty. However, when he meets a Joker-obsessed patient called Harleen "Lee" Quinzel, a twisted, musical romance follows.

Understandably, many fans are disappointed that the Joker sequel is again taking major liberties with the source material; for starters, the Harleen on the page is a psychiatrist who falls under the Clown Prince of Crime's spell, not a fellow inmate.

While this version won't be the Harley Quinn we know from the comics, we do have a great new look at Lady Gaga's take on the villain (alongside Joaquin Phoenix's Joker) thanks to a new magazine cover.

"[Director] Todd [Phillips] took a very big swing with this whole concept and with the script, giving the sequel to 'Joker' this audacity and complexity," Gaga recently told Variety. "There’s music, there’s dance, it’s a drama, it’s also a courtroom drama, it’s a comedy, it’s happy, it’s sad."

"It’s a testament to [Todd] as a director, that he would rather be creative than just tell a traditional story of love," the singer and actor continued. "We asked ourselves what would need to be true for two people to just break into song in the middle of a conversation?"

"Where does the music come from when no one can hear it but the characters? Neither Arthur nor Lee are professional singers, and they shouldn’t sound like they are," Gaga concluded.

Addressing the Joker sequel's approach to Harley Quinn, Phillips said, "The high voice, that accent, the gum-chewing and all that sort of sassy stuff that’s in the comics, we stripped that away. We wanted her to fit into this world of Gotham that we created from the first movie."

Margot Robbie played that version of Harley in the DCEU, so the fact we're getting something new with this movie could be something fans ultimately embrace. We'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out in October.

Take a closer look at Joker: Folie À Deux's Joker and "Lee" in the X posts below.

Joker: Folie À Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him.

The sequel stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, opposite Oscar-winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born). The movie also features Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.

Phillips, who was nominated for Oscars for directing, writing and producing Joker, directed Joker: Folie À Deux from a screenplay by fellow Oscar nominee Scott Silver & Phillips, based on characters from DC. This follow-up was produced by Phillips, Oscar nominee Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Joseph Garner. Lady Gaga served as music consultant.

Joker: Folie À Deux arrives in theaters on October 4.

You mean 1980s New York? Why wouldn't a girl with a Brooklyn accent fit into that world? This guy's a joke, pun intended.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Why would you watch Joker and then expect Margot Robbie? 😂

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - yeah, because the current Harley by Margot has been such a hit in all the movies she's been in that ultimately failed.

And Quinn originated on Batman The Animated Series, not the comics.

@FireandBlood - at what point did I say she had to act like Margot? I'm talking about her accent.

@FireandBlood - All I said is that a girl with a Brooklyn accent wouldn't be unrealistic. I didn't say she had to act all goofy and quirky. Like my reply to curbn, Marisa Tomei from My Cousin Vinny would have worked just fine in this world.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Gaga is a lifelong New Yorker and lived a bit in Brooklyn, so I guess it all works out.

I'm just glad I don't feel any real affinity for these characters. All of their comicbook goodness is being stripped away to make a " real " film.... watch them make a third one in which Arthur has a dream of Batman shot in B&W .......

You all should be grateful they’re actually giving us movies like this based on comic books. The last thing this already stale genre needs is more of the same.

@FireandBlood - completely agree. The genre is getting stale. It took Marvel bringing out every character possible in a team-up movie to make the sacred billion dollar mark.
What's next and how many more characters have to show up to make the next big hit?

This is a simple, grounded film that is a character study (one in the first JOKER, now just two here) that explored more than just comicbook stuff. This is a take of "what could happen in the real world." Not just a "grounded" take. The actual things that could happen in our society.

@FireandBlood - That's the studios collective faults... It's only gotten stale because every handful of years we have to see the same handful of characters get re-booted and their stories re-told. Batman and Spider-man are great examples of this. Once a studio gets an IP rolling (or worse yet inherit an IP) they feel they now know better than the fans and start doing weird gambles with it. (Star Wars, I'm looking at you.)
Casual comic fans and Life-long fans alike know that there are hundreds of amazing stories that would make great story arcs put on screen, but if the studio can't understand it, then there's no money there.

FireandBlood - 8/29/2024, 11:17 AM
@J0RELLC00LJ - We’ve only had 1 live action Batman or Spider-Man movie in the last 5 years, both of which were among the best received CBMs released within the last 5 years. The problem is the every other Tom, Dick and Harry character getting a movie or show, with no regard for quality, and just the single desire to make another formulaic superhero movie to fill out a cinematic universe and make a quick buck. That’s why movies like Joker standout, not because of Batman and Spider-Man, but because of all the rest.

J0RELLC00LJ - 8/29/2024, 11:12 PM
@FireandBlood - I get what you're saying, and I forget my age sometimes, I've been watching Bats and Spidey get redone since Keaton and Maguire, and thats been a few times now. My poorly made point was that no great stories ever get covered because we have to collectively reboot them every generation...and Marvel has stretched the "Whedon Method" as far as it can go. So no doubt stuff starts to feel stale.

Cool cover , I dig it!!.

Also reading Gaga’s comments , it’s made me realize that one of the reasons I am actually intrigued by this film is because it does feel “unique” compared to the Taxi Driver/King of Comedy-esque film we got first time around…

However since it is building off of that film which I didn’t care much for , I still do think it just looks decent for now.

WB and DC need a win i suppose, but i don't feel excited for this. the 1st was OK, but highly overrated IMO.

Gaga did impress me with her acting in A Star is Born and House of Gucci, so i'm sure she'll do just fine. I can imagine though she's going to release some song related to the movie somehow to drum up more interest to kick off the marketing. Let's see how it does...

The macabre version of "Benny & Joon", all this is. But at least now the crowd that always looked at OG Joker and Harley's mentally and physically abusive "relationship" as the "ideal kooky relationship" have a movie to go to.

They just need to start slapping the "Elseworlds" logo on stuff, so that comic fans going with non comic fans to the movies can just explain it akin to Marvels confusing as sh!t Multiverse

Halloween 2024, gonna be interesting to see

Sigh, I don't like the promotion of this film at all. Everything is trying to make them look "cool" which doesn't surprise me, but it sure as shit backs up my points about the problems with the first films third act.

Are we positive that Harley is another inmate? She's on the other side of the interview glass in scenes so I didn't know.
