When we first heard about Warner Bros.' plans for a standalone Joker origin move we were led to believe that the film wouldn't feature Batman in any capacity, and while that may still be the case, it will reportedly include a very interesting nod to The Clown Price of Crime's nemesis.

During the latest episode of Movie Talk, Collider's Jeff Sneider said he heard that Thomas Wayne is "going to have a big role" in the film. How Bruce Wayne's father will fit into the story remains a mystery, but if Thomas is a major part of the script, there's always a chance we'll also get a cameo appearance from his young son.

In related news, The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez has heard that Academy Award-winner Frances McDormand has passed on playing The Joker's mother. It seems the studio wants a big name for this role.

I think they should avoid the parents, and concentrate on his wife and terrible life. I feel like this may turn into "childhood was bad, so i am evil"

The Joker’s mother? Thomas Wayne plays a big part? I want to remain positive about all CBMs but this sounds worse and worse all the time.

@TheUnworthyThor - I think Thomas Wayne might be involved in the overall story in a big way, which isn't surprising considering how big he is in Gotham, but I doubt we'll see much of him.

Also, the Joker's mother could be interesting. Not if she's an awful mom and he goes bad because of it, that's cliche, but maybe if she's somewhat decent and really tries her best.

@BillyBatson1000 - Never heard of backlash for that. Backlash for casting Keaton, sure but not the Joker being the guy who killed Bruce Wayne's parents. That was 88-89 so fans weren't that picky on story details and they also didn't have the internet. They didn't have a lot of pivotal Batman books yet either. I'm not saying they should go that route but you're inflating the backlash for that film.

They'll probably do something much worse, have Joker's mom responsible for their deaths somehow.

@BullyFU - You're going to get me to show my age aren't you? Trust me. There was 'bad word of mouth' amongst everyone I knew back then in comic books, or who bought comic books. Most of the Keaton-angst ended with the first image of him in the suit. And the trailer sealed the deal. Even the 'haters' were sold. But dropping Joe Chill from the role of murdering Bruce Wayne's parents? That was the main topic of heated conversation between all fellow Batman obsessives. You're right that the mechanism to immediately air that grievance with Warner Bros/DC did not exist, so 'backlash' is probably the wrong word. My bad. I hope you're wrong about the 'Joker's mom' function - that really would be much worse.

So if the main narrative is set in the '80s, does that mean Thomas Wayne appears there opposite a 40+ year old Joker (making him like 60+ by the time he faces Batman), or will Thomas cameo in flashbacks set during Joker's childhood which would presumably be in the '60s?

Have him be a henchmen for other supervillains at first. Just so he could learn the ropes. Could have Batman appear but from the pov of the bad guys. idk lol

@Kevwebsz - There was a 4 part comic several years ago focused on the Penguin with flashbacks to his childhood. I always thought they handled Batman really well in it. Basically they never showed a full shot of him, he was always just encroaching into the panel or hidden in shadows. It kind of showed how criminals would look away or be so stressed/scared when he was there that it gave him almost a supernatural quality. Maybe if they go for something like that it would be cool.
