Eh, some of these movies were enjoyable. Split list.

Superman Returns does not belong on the list with the rest of these.

@mountainman - I always thought of Superman returns as a pretty bad film, with a series of FANTASTIC scenes
mountainman
mountainman - 10/24/2023, 12:58 PM
@Izaizaiza - Oh it’s not a great film by any means. In fact, I’d probably rate it a 6/10. But every other film on this list is far worse.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 10/24/2023, 1:01 PM
@mountainman - I definitely agree with that. Amazing how well Spider-Man two handled Gwen’s death for being such a bad movie otherwise
mountainman
mountainman - 10/24/2023, 1:04 PM
@Izaizaiza - I thought the Peter and Gwen stuff was good in Amazing Spider-man 2. The costume was awesome and those movies had the coolest 1st person perspective scenes.

That movie primarily failed in its villains, which all three were so terrible they drag down any potential good parts.

I thought the first one was mostly good besides cool guy Peter, no snout Lizard, and the weird dark mystery with Peter’s parents.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 10/24/2023, 3:08 PM
@mountainman - agreed on all those points. The choice to go with "cool guy" Peter was a weird one
mountainman
mountainman - 10/24/2023, 3:33 PM
@Izaizaiza - I liked Garfield as Spider-man but didn’t like him as Peter. Funnily enough, I liked Maguire as Peter but felt his Spider-man wasn’t as good as Garfield’s.

Izaizaiza - 10/24/2023, 3:37 PM
@mountainman - agree again

@mountainman - wasn’t a bad movie, just kind of boring for a Superman movie.

Ryan Reynolds should have been cast as The Flash and Bradley Cooper should have been Green Lantern!

@Order66 - Agreed. He's a toy guy anyway.

I remember how he demanded Eddie Brock/Venom be put in Spider-Man 3 because it would "sell toys".

Spider-Man 3 was already bloated enough with Gobby Jr., Sandman, and a crappily placed excuse of a Gwen, MJ, Peter love triangle.

HulkisHoly - 10/24/2023, 12:54 PM
@Mercwitham0uth -

I go back and forth on this one. Spider-Man 3 has a great final act but it’s really messy on how it gets there, not dissimilar to Dark Knight Rises. Peter, MJ, and Harry were always the three main characters in all three films. Every film is really about them all, not just Peter. To have Peter forgive Sandman and Harry sacrificing himself was good.

But, I think the film would have been better with just Goblin and Venom or Sandman. If they did just Venom, I think it could have been smart since, Eddie Brock is the only unsympathetic villain in the Raimi films. Remove the Sandman Uncle Ben true killer plot. Perhaps have Harry kill Gwen similar to the comics in the middle of the film, and this drives Peter into a murdereous revenge mission via the black suit while MJ is being ignored and disrespected. Then of course, Harry could pretend to be a good person to MJ and manipulate her against Peter, while Eddie continues to gun for Peter’s job at work thus leading to his firing etc and revenge eventually into Venom.

Something along those lines could have worked and been more streamlined than what we got due to all the Sandman stuff.

Some of those characters are second-stringers that need a more popular focus.

The whole 'collective cinematic universe' deal is behind us. Marvel had a fantastic (with varied degrees of quality) run up to 'Avengers: Endgame'. Now Marvel/DC should be thinking:

One solid film. One at a time.

Make A great film. Then I'll begin trusting again.

NinnesMBC - 10/25/2023, 1:07 AM
@BillyBatson1000 - That safe approach makes a lot of sense for DC films right now though, if WBD wasn't so hungry for quick cash they would listen.
BillyBatson1000
BillyBatson1000 - 10/25/2023, 4:56 AM
@NinnesMBC - Yep - W.Bros couldn't even sell the DC properties now (aside from Batman) with any realistic expectation of a profit. The 'brand' is damaged (even if that's just in the court of public perception). They could rebuild, gradually with stand-alone, lower-budget films based on characters that require less CGI and other expensive elements. DC's history contains tons of gems - just like Marvel.

Not even one MCU movie?
Well, if you say so.
Fogs
Fogs - 10/24/2023, 12:55 PM
@SiMo - Just wait for The Marvels.

After Eternals and Quantumania that's the next gut punch the MCU will take.
mountainman
mountainman - 10/24/2023, 1:00 PM
@Fogs - If that tracking is accurate, it’ll make less than $400 million WW. It’s going to be the biggest non-pandemic loss in MCU history.
mountainman
mountainman - 10/24/2023, 1:03 PM
@Fogs - And I’m being pretty generous with that $400 million WW estimate. It could do MUCH worse than that. We could be looking at a Flash level bomb here.
Fogs
Fogs - 10/24/2023, 3:54 PM
@mountainman - Word of mouth will make it or break it. Odds are not good for this one.
DanFlashesShirt
DanFlashesShirt - 10/24/2023, 8:25 PM
@Fogs - you think it will bomb or you WANT it to bomb?
Fogs
Fogs - 10/25/2023, 5:36 AM
@DanFlashesShirt - I want it to be good AND not to bomb. I grew up with Marvel comics and am afraid the best CBM period is past us, and I don't want that.

But I don't think this film is going to be successful. It looks bland AF just like Quantumania, unfortunately.

TheVandalore - 10/24/2023, 12:42 PM
There will never be a worse comic book movie than Catwoman. I don't even consider the old Captain America or unreleased Fantastic Four movie to be as bad as Catwoman. Other comic book movies are bad, but Catwoman was offensive to the senses. It hurts my brain trying to vibe with the writers vision. Just on every level, Catwoman is conceptually and entirely an abomination.
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 10/24/2023, 12:45 PM
It's an abomination to the point of if I were to ever meet someone who unironically likes Catwoman, I wouldn't feel safe with that person.

Flash wasn’t that bad. The CGI was the only abysmal part I’d say, Ignoring Ezra as psycho in real life, of course.
Again, it’s not an incredible film but I would say it’s the best of this list, easily.

I agree with most, but black adam should be on the list and so should the worst mcu movie, love and blunder.@taika destroyed thor and crated a 3 stooges, power rangers flix, full of plotholes, kiddies fighting spiders bad cgi and Harry Potter flying. As a matter of fact, all movies on the list are better than blunder, except green lantern and morbious.

Superman Returns is not terrible. It's pretty good imo. The only things I don't like are stalker Superman and the fact that he doesn't throw a single punch. Other than that, it's the most "Superman" movie there is next to the first two Donner films. Singer captured the spirit of the character quite perfectly. The tone of the movie has just the right balance of lightheartedness, seriousness, and camp. The action sequences are amazing. It's full of hope and heroism. The score is great. And one thing that I think gets overlooked the most is the production design. Metropolis feels like an actual fictional city. I love the art deco influence. It's very reminiscent of how its been drawn in the comics.

Besides Catwoman and Morbius, each of these were watchable and even enjoyable. Not amazing by any stretch of the imagination, but still watchable.

Superman returns was a little disappointing...but definitely does not deserve to be on this list. Shame about the lack of fight scenes , too many sentimental story elements, snd the return to Krypton scene , which was cut, is jaw dropping !!

No Eternals,Ant-Man 3 or The Marvels.

DanFlashesShirt

@marvel72 - because Eternals wasn’t a bad movie. Also, the Marvels, really? You’re that triggered by a movie that hasn’t even come out yet?
