It was Agatha Mephisto all along? Following the villain's mention in last night's episode of Agatha All Along, showrunner Jac Schaeffer has broken her silence on finally giving the MCU's devil a name...

In yesterday evening's episode of Agatha All Along, Jennifer Kale told Teen that there are rumblings Agatha Harkness exchanged her baby for the Darkhold and that Nicholas Scratch is possibly now a demon or Agent of Mephisto.

It was a passing comment but one which instantly registered for comic book fans. Not only was this the first time Mephisto has been mentioned in the MCU, but it confirms he exists and is hopefully meant as a tease that we'll see him sooner rather than later.

Total Film spoke with Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer and asked her to elaborate on what feels like a long-overdue payoff to all those WandaVision fan theories.

Confirming it was a "nod and wink" to them, she then reiterated the Mephisto mention "was a nod, definitely, yes."

"So the fan theories themselves don't inform like the actual plotting that I do or that Marvel does either," Schaeffer added. "It's really more, I like to think about what is the thing people are engaging on? Like, what is the thing that's sort of lighting them up? And is it the thing that's lighting me up?"

"That's where I feel that I'm successful and my team is successful, when we can find that sweet spot of we are excited about it, it's making our brains tingle, and making us want to dress up, but it’s also having that effect on fans."

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, Schaeffer talked more about Mephisto and teased a connection between him and Agatha.

"With these shows, so often there is something that is at once a joke and a wink and a nod, and actually has something legitimate underneath it," she explained. "As we all know, Mephisto is a character who's very wrapped into Agatha's storyline. I mean, people have to watch, but we're always playing with the audience in that way."

We'll have to wait and see whether Mephisto factors into Agatha All Along but a cameo surely can't be off the table, even if it's just to set up what we've heard is a much larger role in Ironheart.

So I'm wating for all the eps to drop before I check this show out in order to ensure it's not gonna be a waste of time by the end (as I've learned to do with the Marvel Disney+ catalogue).

Can someone tell if it's any good so far? I've heard mixed things.

@HOTSHOT - It's definitely a good show. A solid continuation of Wandavision and also the Darkhold Saga.

@SonOfAGif - I hope so. So far, based on the reviews for the new ep on IMDb, it feels a lot like the typical Marvel shlock that I'm kind of worn out by. I'll see if it does well by the finale.

@HOTSHOT - It is good if into fun spooky halloween stuff, it doesn't overdo the comedic and is creepy enough without heading away from family fun realm (as in Buffy level creepy).

So, yes, for all of that it is good thus far but won't appeal to all comic book movie folk as more along the lines of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina than it is along the lines Dr Strange. If you liked Buffy the Vampire, Hocus Pocus or the first Scooby Doo film for instance you'll likely enjoy this (even if you can pick flaws in it).

Important to note that the first episode, there is intentional over acting which for some of us they pushed too far for too long (my wife loved it however) but for me was a lot better with the second episode and only realy gets going fully in the third.

Oh, and they have have managed to make Teen work and isn't the OTT stereotype the first teaser made him come across as. The show does have camp aspects but in the normal way witchy stuff tends to be not in the way that can be a turn off for many. IE a couple of characters happen to be LGBT but no more so than characters happen to be straight in any other given show and thus isn't a major aspect of the narrative in any way or a distraction from the story.

Hope that helps. and hope you enjoy when you do get around to watching (but it is OK if it doesn't work for you also).

@HOTSHOT - don’t go by those reviews

Those things can be bombed so much by people who haven’t even seen the show.

Just watch it and decide for yourself

@HOTSHOT - I'm into the first three episodes so far.

I don't believe I'm necessarily the target audience but as I've said before in other posts, the spooky vibe had me interested in watching and so far, it's held my attention. The cast is also really solid so I'd give it a shot.

In more interesting news...

Looks ok, there's nothing that stands out as different.

To be honest i would have preferred to see de Armas' Paloma from the Bond movie fleshed out more than this new character... she was a bit more original.

It's only a matter of time before Mephisto as a character has to show up in the MCU somewhere. The supernatural and demonic aspect of the storytelling involves Mephisto and Chthon. At some point we will have to see Mephisto especially if they plan on bringing in Ghost Rider.

@SonOfAGif - He should be the villain of a Silver Surfer movie somewhere down the line. After the reboot maybe.

It was great to finally hear the name…

I like it being a nod & response to the fan theories while tying it into an exploring Agatha’s character with her supposedly trading her son for the Darkhold.

Anyway another good episode imo , liking the show overall thus far…

Also RIP poor Ms Hart/“Sharon”.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/26/2024, 1:01 PM
@TheVisionary25 - There was just the slightest hint she didn't intend to trade her son, or at minimum has regret over it. I feel they are going to go with the did a deal with a devil and she thought she could outwit Mephisto and never intended/expected he would take her son. Could be along the lines of the never believing she would have a kid when she did the deal and the demon came along years later to collect after she had bonded with her baby.

Half decent chance her embrace of being this self centered wicked witch is actualy at least in part a bit of an act to keep people at arms length fearful of attachments after experiencing so much grief from loosing people she loved in her long life.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/26/2024, 1:06 PM
@Apophis71 - I could see that

She seems to have quickly attached to “Teen” given her response when he was about to drink the poisoned wine unless she might suspect he’s her son
SATW42
SATW42 - 9/26/2024, 12:44 PM
I mean, she sold her son to mephisto for the book right? And wiccan is being retconned to be Agatha's son. And lady death is how we are going to see more of Sharon.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/26/2024, 12:48 PM
@SATW42 - I don’t think Wiccan will be changed to be Agatha’s son in this

The Nicholas Scratch thing like any mystery is a misdirect and that it will be revealed that he’s Billy

They certainly make you want to think it’s the former and perhaps Agatha already is starting to suspect it
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/26/2024, 12:54 PM
@SATW42 - I do not see Wiccan being retconned into Agatha's son at all, only that they are using him to show she does actualy have a maternal side along with showing remorse for what occured with her actual Son...

...as to Sharon, if she is dead then death will thus come for her soul thus the way for her to turn up and join the coven for the rest of the trials.

There was a sneak peak in the trailers that suggested a walking dead vibe so would put money on Zombie Sharon appearing and ofcourse entirely plausible the road just booted her out unscathed but allowed the witches to believe she was dead and will be alive and well when they get back to Westview.
SATW42
SATW42 - 9/26/2024, 1:21 PM
@TheVisionary25 - Him being wiccan is pretty much a ...Locke at this point, I'm not convinced he's Wanda's Billy. It's also just wishful thinking on my part because I really don't want multiverse hullabaloo in this show.

That being said, I know people hate this Saga, but I do appreciate how segmented it is compared to the linear story telling of the Infinity Saga.

You have a magical side: WandaVision -> Shang Chi -> Spiderman NWH -> Multiverse of Madness -> Agatha all along

A very earth bound/government side: angle of things with Black Widow -> FATWS -> Wakanda Forever -> Secret Invasion -> Cap4 -> Thunderbolts -> Iron Heart (which will be the connection to the magic side)

Street level: Moon Knight (even though I know, gods and stuff), she hulk, daredevil, ms marvel, echo etc

And then cosmic: Thor, Eternals, The Marvels, Guardians.

There's been hits and misses but I'm very interested to see how it all comes together
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/26/2024, 1:35 PM
@SATW42 - i still think it will be Billy but it don’t see it being multiverse related but moreso through supernatural means fitting of the show.

I think hate is a strong word but I do think it hasn’t been as strong as the Infinity Saga but that’s because we haven’t reached its end yet which may or may not change my opinion (the Infinity Saga wasn’t built up too great but the way it resolved made it better in hindsight).

I do like the segmentation but I also think it’s one of the reasons why people feel it’s all over the place.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/26/2024, 1:51 PM
@SATW42 - The only thing I DON'T see them using with Teen is a multiverse excuse, in the comics Wiccan was born to 'normal' parents years before his first comic appearance where Wanda supposedly created him using magic before him being wiped from existance prior to returning and becoming Wiccan (then later on learning about a connection to the Scarlet Witch).

Timelines need not be completely linear in comics (and in some fringe scientific theories) so reincarnation theoreticaly could occur before your prior life started and magic along can be an excuse for many things.

We'll see specificaly how they spin it out but it will likely be close to the source that he was born on the sacred timeline 13yrs before the events of Wandavision to the Kaplan's but is also somehow connected to the Billy Wanda created and likely only came into having any powers/interest in regards to magic after she created her Billy.

@SATW42 - I'm fond of them branching out as well. It kind of allows you to just tune into a particular branch.

Mephisto is no joke.

I mean he is. He became one, but only because people kept expecting him
But we kept expecting him because of the stories that were being adapted, The Infinity Gauntlet, Billy and Tommy, etc. So we kept seeing him where he wasn't.
TheIronDuck
TheIronDuck - 9/26/2024, 1:41 PM
@ObserverIO - I just hope Sascha Baron Cohen doesn't play the role too camp and I hope visually they don't downplay the furry aspect.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/26/2024, 1:55 PM
@ObserverIO - Exactly, the theories didn't come from nowhere, but also in the comics the Mephisto aspect was a retcon late in their story so a minor delay till after the twins were wiped from existance rather than the reason they are isn't that big of a deal...

...but was always likely only a matter of time before he DID make an appearance.

@DrReedRichards - Cool, don't know that character well enough to comment, but just thinking on the potential that could lead to if they leaned into the idea of connecting her to the F4 in ways nobody saw coming regardless if they do or don't go with her being a Nanny.
