Well, today's episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier kicked things off with a bang! If you need a reminder of how things played out or are just curious about what to expect, then keep on reading...

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier starts with a sombre Sam Wilson putting his finest suit on and packing up Captain America's shield, all while he remembers Steve Rogers' words to him at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

After the somewhat reserved title card for the series comes on screen, we follow The Falcon on a mission to rescue a soldier who has been kidnapped by LAF. Captain America: The Winter Soldier's Batroc is leading them, and what follows is an intense, action-packed sequence showcasing Sam's new wings (and the robotic Redwing). Taking Batroc's men down one-by-one in the sky, The Falcon eventually manages to outsmart some missiles to make the save, though the villain does appear to make his escape (we have a feeling that's not the last the hero will see of him).

Back on the ground, Sam is repairing Redwing while chatting to his military buddy Joaquin. The latter explains the danger of the LAF, but says the Flag-Smashers could be even worse. They think life was better during the Blip, and want to create a world without borders. Back in Washington D.C., we seemingly learn why Sam was in that suit packing up the shield; he's at the Smithsonian giving a speech about Cap's legacy (all in the past tense...). Ultimately, as Rhodey watches on, he donates the shield to the museum. It clearly wasn't an easy choice for Sam, but a government bigwig thanks him and says he made the right decision. The two Avengers later have a catch-up, and while War Machine seems upset that there won't be anyone there to wield the shield, Sam won't be swayed.

In a swanky hotel, a group of friends call it a night, while a V.I.P. is escorted through the building. Suddenly, the Winter Soldier attacks. Has Bucky resumed being an assassin in the six months that have passed since we last saw him? "Hail HYDRA," he says, killing his target before gunning down one of the innocents we saw arriving a little earlier (unfortunately for him, he's a witness).

With that, Bucky wakes up in the present, meeting with his therapist the next day. He's been pardoned by the government and is making "amends" for his past actions. He recently crossed one name off his list by helping the authorities arrest a corrupt official he helped get into office as the Winter Soldier. Bucky broke a few of his therapist's rules to make it happen, and as a former soldier herself, she doesn't buy his later claims that he just wants to find peace. She says he needs to make friends, and it seems Bucky is trying given how he's befriended an elderly man, Yori, who lives nearby. He ends up getting Bucky a date with a waitress, but we soon learn that Yori is, in fact, the father of the young man the former assassin killed as the Winter Soldier. He just doesn't have the courage to admit he was responsible, but clearly feels tremendous guilt.

At home, Sam argues with his sister about the family boat. She wants to sell up after holding the fort during the Blip, but he doesn't want to say goodbye to their family legacy. He suggests getting a loan through the bank, but Sarah isn't convinced they'll help. Bucky goes on his date - it's a little awkward - but just as things start looking up for him, she talks about Yori and how awful it is for a parent to lose their child. Bucky heads to his apartment to confess all, but can't bring himself to do it, and instead just gives his friend the money he owed him from lunch. We catch a glimpse of his list, and there's one name which really stands out: Zemo.

In Switzerland, Joaquin is investigating the Flag-Smashers, and finds himself in the midst of one of their gatherings. A group of supporters gather and don masks in order to hide someone who appears to be their leader escaping with some stolen loot. He displays super strength, and leaves the Sam's ally bloodied and beaten on the ground. Interestingly, we do catch what appears to be a fleeting glimpse of Erin Kellyman's character as she whistles to get everyone's attention - could those Songbird rumours be correct?

Regardless, things don't go well at the bank, and while the manager recognises that Sam is an Avenger, he simply can't help the brother and sister with a loan given how much things have changed since the Blip. Sarah is upset, but Sam is determined they won't sell the boat and house. Later that day. Joaquin fills him in on what happened, but is interrupted by a breaking news story. That government bigwig who told Sam he did the right thing is holding a press conference saying America needs a hero who can inspire them and be a symbol for the country. With that, he introduces the NEW Captain America as a devastated Sam watches on. John Walker walks out and winks towards the camera as the episode ends...

What I saw was very enjoyable but I wish they had gotten a little farther into the arc. But as setups go it was first class. I'm just a little greedy :).

@JDL -

but I wish they had gotten a little farther into the arc.

In the first episode? That's not usually how arcs work. 😛

@Humperdink - I was thinking a 2 ep start but to be fair with only 6 of these things that was wishful thinking.

@Humperdink - pretty sure he means he wants the actual plot to have started by now. It set up the main villain and established where the heroes are now but we don't even have those 2 heroes coming together yet. And falcon is basically only involved in so far as he has a job there.

@JDL - Lol definitely slow your roll. If you think of this as your standard 3 act narrative, we're still in the first half of Act 1. I truly loved this episode because rather than jumping into the thickness of it, we're seeing where these characters are at. Especially considering this is the most we've ever gotten from Bucky. That reveal of him watching over the father of the man he killed, hit!!

@Humperdink - It does in TV.

@Deonox - My problem is that this is binge content presented on an episodic schedule. I prefer the genres not be mixed like that.

@JDL - I don’t think this is binge content, that’s just what you’re used to dealing with in 2021, but that’s clearly not the path that Marvel is going down so it’s best to get used to it now.

@kolatrl - My definition of binge content in this case is simple; "It's a 6 hour movie snipped at certain points at the 42-50 minute mark".

Versus case of the week with a season long arc. This is the traditional episodic season long format first encountered IME with Buffy but which probably existed before that.

This episode had a much slower pace than I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed it though.

I'm glad they didn't have Steve's funeral in this and that they (hopefully) just keep the mystery about Steves future in the MCU up in the air.

As said in the other article: Love me some Switzerland representation in the MCU

Even though the accents were wonky, plus that's not how the police looks like in Zurich but whatever. LOVED IT!

@SpaceAgent - I always took his death in far from home as a cover story so Steve could live in peace.

Pre-Snap Tony and Pepper were funding entire MIT classes' projects just for shits and giggles but had The Avengers on some damn 360 deals, living off of top ramen and vibes. Captain America and Sam were out in Africa dodging bullets on Vet Minimum contracts smh

@OmegaDaGrodd - No joke. That was dirty. Im not sure I believe Tony would do such a thing. Idk. Maybe that was apart of his ego and superiority / God complex. The Avengers as an organization and Tony knowing how contracts work I'm sure he had some income coming for them. But who knows.

Deonox
Deonox - 3/19/2021, 7:39 AM
@OmegaDaGrodd - Nah Tony was funding them, but Sam was on the run with Cap for 2 years and was snapped away for 5. Meaning it's probably been 7 years since he's had stable income
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 3/19/2021, 8:17 AM
@OmegaDaGrodd - The Avengers were getting a pay check when they didn't go on the run. Falcon went on the run with Cap after Civil War and then was snapped away in Infinity War. Falcon mentioned in Infinity War "Well the hotels weren't exactly 5-star." Meaning they were probably sleeping wherever they could just to survive. Then Endgame happened and Avengers Campus was destroyed and Tony is dead. So now Sam works through government contracts to make a living.
OmegaDaGrodd
OmegaDaGrodd - 3/19/2021, 8:32 AM
@SonOfAGif - I just feel like that entire time he was an Avenger (1-2 years) his savings account would've been fat as hell, meaning he shouldn't even NEED a loan. And maybe during the post CIVIL WAR period his accounts would've been frozen, but I feel like when he fought with everyone to save every existing life his account would've been unfrozen

Let alone how strange it is that Tony didn't have that man in his will lol

SonOfAGif - 3/19/2021, 8:55 AM
@OmegaDaGrodd - It has been bugging me as to how Wanda had a new Buick in Wandavision and how she even could afford clothes and so on and then it hit me that each Avenger had a spending account. I think Stark set up accounts for each Avenger. Let's say at $200,000 each. Some like Clint and Natasha were already well off thanks to Fury and SHIELD. I don't think Sam or any new Avenger that wasn't recruited by Tony had a spending account. Like Vision and Thor because one was a synthezoid and the other was rich outside of Earth. It wouldn't surprise me if T'Challa helped Cap with some funds to help them on their quest during their time of hiding.

@OmegaDaGrodd - Sokovia violations could have meant asset seizures and frozen bank accounts, I guess.

But I do personally like how this reflects the classic comics where the Avengers was sort of like a kid's clubhouse. The poor kids still had to go home, even if they got to play with the rich kid's toys. It doesn't make the most sense in the world, though, I'll admit.

That Winter Soldier theme tho...we all know $hits about to go down when that starts up. Man I liked WandaVision but this was the proper start to phase 4, even over Widow. This is what all us Marvel action junkies were craving. Weird they started with such a niche project in WV but hey we got it now right? Loved that ep. Happy it didn't just pile on the info. Love the international setting, lots of coverage as they had teased leading up to release. I thought the focus would mainly be on Sam, so it was dope to see Buck get a good amount of treatment too. Can't wait for the Baron whenever he joins the party. Deffo feel like this is the format we were promised when D+ Marvel was first announced. Certainly got the "6 episode event" vibes they been teasin' recently. Waaaay prefer this 6 x 45 to 10 x 30. I feel there is a place for the more tv show tv show and it keeps things fresh. But I way prefer the idea the 6 ep shows getting a second season if they're popular and getting your hit in 6 wks as opposed to be dragged out for an entire 10 eps. Anywho, we finally got that spiritual successor to Cap: The Winter Soldier a lot of us have hoped for since 2014, so that's immensely satisfying

@bazzlefrazzle - this was supposed to release before wandavision until covid changed plans. Wandavision was likely much easier to film due to being set in 1 location mostly and having little action scenes.

@bazzlefrazzle - I like to think of the shows as a multi course meal, Wanda vision was a light weird starter to try some new flavours the chef was experimenting with, falcon & WS is more into the meat and 2 veg.

Also, as someone who is mad keen for this project and has been since mid-2019, I feel really satisfied with the ep in and of itself, unlike the titillation of WandaVision, that I'm not super desperate for next Friday's ep. It's probably the cards up approach the writer referred to cf WandaVision and the run time of 40 mins (unless it was handled really well an hour would be too long unless for a finale imho). But yeah, I'm very happy to wait and let it all sink in. Less chance for desperate theory crafting when the writing is tighter. Again, I really like WandaVision, but there is something really satisfying about this one the other didn't quite have.

@bazzlefrazzle - right there with you. It somehow feels really rounded off, but still leaves enough open for me to look forward to next friday.
