Moviegoers have shared their thoughts on The Crow and, if the CinemaScore is any indication, they're enjoying it no more than critics. What does Ruper Sanders make of the backlash to his remake, though?

Lionsgate waited as long as possible before lifting The Crow's review embargo. Seeing as it sits at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that calls it "dreary and poorly paced," it's not hard to see why.

Now, though, regular moviegoers are chiming in with their thoughts and...well, they're seemingly no better.

The Crow has been awarded a B- CinemaScore, putting it on par with the likes of Dark PhoenixHellboy, Sin City: A Dame to Kill ForHulk, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Punisher: War Zone.

In some respects, it feels like the odds have been stacked against The Crow from the beginning. The response to news of a reboot was met with largely negative reactions and the trailer received a surprising amount of scorn, particularly for Bill Skarsgard's appearance as Eric.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, director Rupert Sanders responded to some of the backlash. "I think a lot of people are very active online and not so active in life," he stated. "Get out and do something and have less time throwing stones."

The filmmaker added, "I think it would be great just for people to know that this is a reimagining and wildly different from the original and that the original's still there. I haven't recorded over anyone's VHS. You can still go and see that movie, and I hope this movie resonates with people who loved that movie when they were in their teens. This is my version of that text. It was my adaptation of James's graphic novel, which I loved."

Telling upset fans to go and touch grass doesn't seem like the smartest way to win them over, though Sanders is right that this take on The Crow is very different from its 1994 predecessor (now considered a cult classic).

How would you rate The Crow if you've seen it?

Bill Skarsgård takes on the iconic role of THE CROW in this modern reimagining of the original graphic novel by James O’Barr. Soulmates Eric (Skarsgård) and Shelly (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

The Crow is directed by Rupert Sanders from a script by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider. Producers include Edward R. Pressman, Samuel Hadida, Victor Hadida, John Jencks, and Molly Hassell.

Bill Skarsgård plays Eric alongside FKA Twigs as Shelly, his ill-fated love. The supporting cast includes Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, Laura Birn, and Sami Bouajila.

The Crow is now playing in theaters.

Although he's right, somewhat. About people being constantly online, it'd be refreshing if directors just said, "hey man, I tried to make my best movie, and if you don't like it, it's okay, your opinion is valid, just like someone who liked it". And not just attack movie goers if they didn't like it.

I don't get the hate. Mostly critic because from what I see the casual movie goers seems to be actually divided.

I mean ... I get the hate but I do not understand such a low scores. It's not the worst movie ever. On technical level it's actually pretty good. Cinematography, score, songs, some action sequences ...

If only the plot would be better ... It's really not good. The investigation scenes should also be thrown out the window. The ending is also rather confusing, at least for me. I would talk about the ending little more but then i would have to spoil some things.

5,5 or 6/10

@bobevanz - I still got original on VHS tape. Just did not watch it in many years. Of course they could not top the original. With a bit of luck maybe stay close behind it. Sadly, the plot is just not good and kinda convoluted. Although not that hard to follow.

@bobevanz - I did not rewatch Wicked Prayer but this movie sits somewhere between City of Angels and Salvation. Salvation being the best sequel imo.

I just had a few of my buddies go to see this movie just to assess it for themselves and they came back telling me that I was smart to just stay home.

The way I see it, NO ONE asked for this to be made.

Maybe the director should've just stuck to what the sequels did and made it a continuation with newly named characters instead of trying to modernized Eric and Shelley.

Marvel's Punisher: War Zone (2008) was Great very Underrated movie. Lot of great Gore and Action in this movie. I even bought this movie my favorite Punisher and movie. One of those movies I can watch over and over.

I had posted my thoughts on The Crow in the ""Sequel Bait" Ending Reports" article. I can see why people hate the movie, are critical of it and also why they may like it. Updated version of the Crow, new look, new storyline. For me, it was the storyline and the characters that did not get me invested in the movie, as well as the music. I also was not convinced of them meeting and falling in love so quickly, I do not remember if there was any indication of time lapse. It felt like they were just into a 2 week or a month or so type of relationship. Maybe if they had just changed the names of Eric and Shelly I would have maybe liked it more. Huge fan of the original, trying not to be biased, but it is difficult, lol.

The movie did have a few good things about it but still was pretty bad. The main thing is that people had jobs, got experience respective fields and got paid to support themselves and their families.

I think the movie lacked a lot. I originally defended it when the trailer dropped, but after seeing it last night, I can’t defend this film. It’s really bad. I don’t know how this guy can call himself a filmmaker because, my lord, this was terribly made. I have ADHD, and I feel like I watched a film made by someone who was experiencing it at its worst. Let’s start with the casting of FKA Twigs—my god, she should never be in any role ever again. How is this person an artist? She lacks emotion, and she and Bill had zero chemistry. This film lacked both chemistry and heart. The whole reason for him to come back is because of his love for this girl, but when did they fall in love? The movie was terrible at conveying that. A couple of scenes of them having sex and doing drugs doesn’t make you believe they’re fully in love. I get that they wanted to make Eric and Shelly into modern-day white privileged hoodrats, but neither actor was good at it. Also, it was a terrible choice of direction for the characters. Shelly is supposed to be pure and innocent; they’re supposed to be victims in the wrong place at the wrong time. This film doesn’t convey that at all. It’s hard to rant about how terrible it is because they supposedly had the best sources. You don’t feel any compassion or understand why Eric is brought back for her, or why he sacrifices himself for her. Also, the Crow has all these powers, but this dude only had a healing factor—that’s about it. He was just a clumsy guy who could kill people because he couldn’t die. The biggest issue with this movie was the music. They put random songs in random spots, and in areas where there should have been music, there was nothing but generic movie soundtrack filler. It felt like this movie was put together by Hallmark or something. The only somewhat okay scene, which was still a miss, was the scene in the trailer where he’s killing all the guards at the opera. And guess what? They used some random opera song that felt completely out of place. There was no gothic feel to this at all. The movie lacked so much heart. It’s like someone wrote a script and basically used CliffsNotes for the screenplay and called it a script. There has to be another hour’s worth of the movie that was cut to make it feel like a complete story, because this felt like CliffsNotes turned into a movie but missing the important parts. For this guy to tell people to get off the internet—sorry, buddy, but I think you need to get out of making movies, because holy shit, did you drop the ball big time. No wonder this took years to get done and had so many exits from it. Don’t waste your money at all. I was very open to seeing them make this movie, but holy shit, it’s awful. I’d rather watch Speed 2or Jack and Jill and call them blockbuster hits compared to this. It’s a very bad film, and I can’t see anyone liking it. Even people who never saw the original would probably say it’s terrible. Sorry for the rant but I just had to get it out this was horrible.

@lazlodaytona. Up to you, I thought it was worth it. I did not read anything about the movie, I only saw the trailer. Just with the trailer, I was intrigued cause the trailer, gave bits of the what the movie was about, but still left out lots to keep you wondering what the movie was about. I really enjoyed so didn't mind. It was goofy, strange, crazy, funny, had some good scares and mystery. Even while watching, I still wasn't sure where the story was going but was enjoying and was trying to guess where it was going. Dan Stevens was great and had fun with role. Never seen Hunter Schafer in anything and she was great in the role as well. Had some cool visuals, sound and atmosphere and the music and score was good to.

@Joeb414. I enjoyed your rant and agree with your thoughts on the movie lol. FKA Twigs was not horrible, I thought, the script, her character arc, the love storyline and direction was the reason I could not be invested in her. The drug direction was a terrible decision. I do not wish overdose on anyone (unless it is a pedo and/or rapist, but I digress), as for fictional characters, I was thinking that maybe they would overdose lol. By that point, the movie was declining for me so it was hard to care for the movie and what was going on.

@AlphaFlight - yeah overall the film itself was just bad. I don’t know who oversaw this being edit and produced but Lionsgate needs to fire them.

An overall consensus grade of “B-“ seems like it’s decent to me but I know CinemaScore has a different barometer then me or others so oh well..

Cool poster though , I haven’t seen that one yet but it’s the best so far!!.

Anyway in regards to Sanders comments , dude certainly didn’t make them come across in the best way but I get it..

Obviously he shouldn’t lump in the fans who have had valid concerns & problems with this take but they are also just trolls or grifters out there who are just sparking outrage for the hell of it and because that’s how some of them even make money.

Granted , I’m someone who likes the 1994 film but hasn’t read the comic so I’m not a hardcore fan but I like seeing new takes or versions on established IP since it helps keep it fresh (this is the 6th take on the Crow in live action and 3rd to have Eric as the lead so it makes sense to me to have a new perspective on it).

However it’s unfortunate that it seems to have not worked out given the generally negative critical reception and dismal B.O takings so far though I’ll still check it out eventually to form my own opinion (especially since I didn’t think it looked all that bad from the trailers).

Step one: Make shit movie

Step two: Get mad at audiences for not liking shit movie

Step three: Tell audience they should go touch grass.

This seems to happen a lot lately. Maybe stop making shitty remakes, reimaginings, reboots and sequels. Usually people don't shit talk good movies. Antagonizing audiences in a time where movies are on a downward slope isn't the best idea.

Oh, man it was worst than everyone saying it is. Seriously, who wrote that... a 13 year old?

I do suspect the movie was longer and was severely edited down because a lot of the scenes cut to another that didn't make any sense.
