Last night, we got the disappointing news that both Doom Patrol and Titans have been cancelled by HBO Max, and DC Studios co-head James Gunn has now confirmed that the decision was out of his hands.

The news broke late last night that HBO Max has cancelled Titans and Doom Patrol, with both DC Comics-based series set to wrap-up after their current fourth seasons.

Producers were said to have seen "the writing on the wall," and ensured that these final seasons will give fans a satisfactory conclusion.

Though the trade's reports did mention that the decision to axe the shows was made before James Gunn and Peter Safran came on board as DC Studios co-heads, the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director still got a lot of flak about it on social media (no surprise there) from people who assumed he was the one to make the call.

Gunn has now responded, making it clear that the decision was out of his hands.

The filmmaker also replied to a query about the cancellations and whether he would have had the power to keep the Titans and Doom Patrol actors on as their respective characters whether the shows were allowed to continue or not.

Can we expect any of the old guard to stay in their roles as the new DCU begins to take shape? Aquaman star Jason Momoa recently stated that he's "going nowhere," but he may not have much choice in the matter if Gunn and Safran do implement a full reboot of the franchise.

Gunn assured fans that the first part of the new DCU slate would be announced this month, but February is fast approaching.

I’d keep Brenton Thwaites as Nightwing. He’s great in the role.

@itzayaboy - IDK how anyone can rly say this. He's got almost the perfect look for Dick Grayson. Like he stepped off the page. But the way he's written, the way Brenton plays him is so far off what Nightwing should be. He's not a wisecracking, confident, smooth-talker in Titans. He's a mostly depressed, angry and mopey dude who is, for the most part, a bad team leader.

Maybe with better writing Brenton could play him differently but right now, comparing him to something like Young Justice Nightwing is painful.

@Nightwing1015 - Agreed completely. Character wise, he’s nothing like Dick Grayson. One of the reasons I find the show unbearable.

titans is one of the worst adaptations dc has ever done. doom patrol was solid, didn't really get around to the last 2 seasons, but it's a minor miracle that a show that niche managed to get as many episodes as it did.
not really hyped for gunn's tenure at dc's second attempt at being the mcu. we'll see.

@tmp3 - Titans had so much potential. Season 2 and 3 I felt were pretty good, but that's when they focused on Gotham and were less mystical in their stories I felt.

@AmazingFILMporg - I think the guy has been pretty open so far I see no reason in him denying this story.

Titans was a waster of an adaptation

@GhostDog - Agreed, the TT are the X-Men of the DCU, and should be getting a film adaptation, WITH Cyborg.

@soberchimera - I would say the Doom Patrol are the X-Men of the DCU (they came before the X-Men actually). But I do agree that the Teen Titans need to be in Gunn's DCU.

@soberchimera - yea Titans is worthy of a film adaptation or at the very least a premium cable/streaming take.

@FilmGuy7878 - In terms of a comic that was competing directly with Uncanny X-Men in the 80s and had young heroes with diverse powers that were constantly hooking up.

Doom Patrol has been consistently good, but Titans just hasn't been nearly as good as the first season, and even that had its low points.

@ModHaterSLADE - Titans went from HBO Max to CW in quality really really fast.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 1/26/2023, 2:50 PM
@ModHaterSLADE - The first season was the weakest. After the first season they leaned more into the Deathstroke and Jason Todd stuff which was the best of Titans for the most part.
