Despite recent reassurances that everything was on track, Legendary and Capcom's Street Fighter reboot has been hit with a major setback.

According to THR, directors Danny and Michael Philippou - who helmed recent horror hit Talk To Me - have parted ways with the project.

The report notes that "scheduling is partly to blame," as Legendary and Capcom were hoping to begin shooting the movie fairly soon, and the Philippous had shifted their focus to what will now be their next project, Bring Her Back, which is scheduled to start production later this month in Australia.

It sounds like there might be a little more to this parting of ways than has been disclosed, but either way, it's a shame that the Philippou brothers will no longer take the helm, as they sounded very enthusiastic about the film during a recent interview.

"I think it's awesome that we have such a connection with the game and to the characters, and there's not like a pre-established big film franchise where we have to fall in line [with] an overall plot," said Danny. "I think that we'd have the freedom to create what that overall arc could be if it was gonna be a bunch of films. And also, we'd love the chance to do an action film. We'd love the chance to do big set pieces of a big budget because even on our YouTube stuff, we're designing stunt rigs that had never been done before, and to do that on a grand scale, man, I feel like we could create something no one's ever seen before."

Michael added, "And I think it's like, diving into the lore of Street Fighter, all the characters, where they come from has been so exciting. You just get endless ideas, so putting them to the screen, yeah, I think we can make something special."

Some early logo artwork for the movie was recently unveiled, which you can check out at the link below.

The Street Fighter video game series remains one of the most popular fighting games franchises of all time, but hasn't fared very well with live-action adaptation up until now. The 1994 movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue has amassed a cult following over the years, but is still widely regarded as a misfire, and the less said about 2009's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li the better!

We know next to nothing about this latest take on the property, so it's impossible to say whether it will break the trend. Hopefully, a new director will be enlisted soon and the movie will move forward without any more hitches.

@HashTagSwagg - I've seen Citizen Kane, I've seen The Godfather part II, but I never really saw what could be done wit the art of filmmaking until I saw Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li.

@ObserverIO - Funny you should mention Citizen Kane, one of the highest rated films ever, that also was a HUGE flop at the Box office (but a complicated story behind it)

@HashTagSwagg - I've always loved how in movies bombs have timers on them and often blink and beep to draw attention to them.
Because, when you plant a bomb secrectly, the first thing you want to do is bring attention to the secrectly planted bomb. 🤪

Didn't know they were even making this and now I'm bummed that they lost a pair of competent directors who actually appreciated the source material.

Kylie Minogue as Cammy spinning around and Ming-Na Wen jumping as Chun-Li... just classic, haha. Plus whatever Van Damme is doing. Movie was great!

@IAmAHoot - JVD is combing his hair off course, like a true Guile. Oh this movie is so bad that's actually entertaining, even if just to laugh at. "To me, it was Tuesday" is peak cinema line 😂

That’s unfortunate since they seemed to genuinely be passionate about it but oh well , hopefully it was indeed just scheduling and nothing more.

Anyway , interested to see who they get next and hope the movie turns out well (if it even happens now).

This franchise has a lot of big screen potential imo!!.

It's a shame. They seemed like the type of directors that would aim to make something a little different and unique compared to your typical action blockbuster. I hope that it wasn't the potential weirdness of their ideas that made them part ways, because that wouldn't give me confidence in the vision of the studio.

@BlackStar25 - I still think a live action or animated series would be better.

.....I don't see how it can work. Easy to craft a story but getting the look and feel of the games, it's either going to come out great or it's going to look incredibly lame. Time will tell I guess.

Are we leaving the comic book media age and entering the age of the video game media? Seems like a lot of video games have been given a movie or show over the past few years.

You would think that Capcom would learn a lesson in the 30 year time span since Street Fighter released. No good live-action Resident Evil/Biohazard adaptations. No good live-action Street Fighter adaptations. Trying to bury Mega Man like Marvel Studios and Disney tried to bury X-Men. The less said about that Monster Hunter live-action adaptation by Paul Anderson the better.
And that's just Capcom! I think it was said somewhere that the c.g.i. Super Mario Bros movie made more money than all video game adapted movies combined. That's pathetic. That's a guaranteed trip to the graveyard. By the time they make these movies and do 'em properly, the people who play these games that they're based off of will be too old to go and see 'em. The whole process and scenario is a phuckin' joke.
