When the review embargo for Joker: Folie À Deux lifted, quite a few critics included spoilers in their write-ups. Although they didn't share a detailed breakdown of what happened, it wasn't too difficult to figure out at least a few major plot points.

Just in case you have managed to avoid finding anything out up until now, some spoilers will follow.

One thing most of the reviews - positive and negative - seemed to agree on is that the ending of Todd Phillips' sequel is destined to divide audiences, and the filmmaker is well aware that people are going to have a very strong reaction to what happens.

"For the people that have seen this movie in general... at the end, they sit and they don't move for about three to five minutes," he tells /Film. "Then they text me, the ones that know me, or email me and go, 'I need a minute to process the movie,'"

"I think it's going to leave you with a very unsettling ... I think it's unsettling," Phillips went on, noting that he feels the sequel "clarifies a lot of things that you might have had questions about in the first movie. I hope it all gets answered."

We're not going to reveal exactly what happens here, but the movie's marketing team has no problem including footage from the final act in this latest teaser!

“Joker: Folie À Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him."

From acclaimed writer/director/producer Todd Phillips comes Joker: Folie À Deux, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019’s Academy Award-winning Joker, which earned more than $1 billion at the global box office and remains the (second) highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

The new film stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, opposite Oscar winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born). The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out, Capote), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.

The movie is rated R for “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.”

@ObserverIO - The movie goes just how was thinking it would go from the first movie. There is a reason the movie is called Joker and not The Joker. Also the Penguin #2 comes out on the 29th.

@LysergicMeinbal - Nah....it's pretty clear why the movie is called Joker and not THE JOKER.That's pretty clear by the ending but there were hints all in the first movie that things were not how they appear.

My guess: Harley kills Arthur, goes to kill Zazie Beetz, cut to black on the elevator closing on Harley's smile.

It's the most try-hard edgy thing I could imagine, so I'm sure Phillips went for it.

Lemme guess. Arthur dies and somebody else is inspired to be Joker, just like Gotham
JackBurton1
JackBurton1 - 9/24/2024, 4:19 PM
@MikeyL - Nah....Arthur is the one who was inspired the whole time.It was a "joke" and mind game on those who watched the two movies the whole time. But there were hints of this being the case numerous times in the first movie. It's called Joker...not THE JOKER.That is made pretty clear by the ending of this movie.

Didn't Director Todd Phillips warn us about the first Joker in Advanced of the STRONG R movie? The General Audience should be careful. The first Joker was a very WEAK R almost PG-13. I walked out of the theater scratching my head.

Even advised back than about our Violet the Joker was. I was very disappointed leaving the theater.

I'm liking Phoenix as this basically Black Label take on Joker, hope he doesn't bite the dust to leave it open for a possibly third film.

Joker: Folie À Deux the Musical with a 63% Rotten Tomatoes Score. An overindulgent musical that lacks the punch of its predecessor. I have very low expectations going in.

If the apparent ending I know is true then yeah , it will definitely be divisive (I can already hear the “so what was the point of these films” arguments happening)…

However reading the full interview , idk how people will feel moreso about him giving clarity to stuff that was left ambiguous in the first one since I feel like people interpreting moments & such differently added enjoyment to their viewing of the original but we’ll see.

The more I hear, the less I care.

The director keeps hollering how shocking and divisive and unsettling it is. He has a massively fat ego. Come watch me assault your senses with my movie!!!!!

I'll watch it when it shows up on TV, just like the 1st one. ZZZZZzzzzzz.....

Low budget movie becomes a big hit. The sequel gets a much bigger budget and sucks ass.

An old story. Joker: Folie à Deux is here to tell it again.
